The trail structure: The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a close-to-nature trail, 70 % of which leads along the forest floor, grassy paths or alongside streams. For this reason, sturdy footwear is definitely recommended.
Germany’s most beautiful hiking trails
The signposts along the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig make it impossible to lose your way and are checked by the trail wardens at least four times a year. The entire route is marked with the logo throughout. All of the distinctive forks in the path are equipped with signs showing where the path leads to and the direction from which it came as well as the short, medium and long-distance destinations. Since the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig has been laid out as a close-to-nature route, it does not normally run through towns and villages. There are access routes leading to the nearest village with a signpost at the beginning of the access route indicating the distance. In addition, there are now standardised information boards at many locations with details on the nearest guest houses and restaurants (telephone number, opening hours, closing day, etc.)
Closures or diversions:
Should part of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig be closed due, for example, to tree felling in the forest, a diversion will be automatically marked up. In the winter months, snow and ice may cause the trail to become impassable on higher ground.
