Pilgrimages to the tomb of St James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, have been documented since the early Middle Ages. Today, almost half a million pilgrims reach the cathedral of the city in Galicia every year. Pilgrimage routes, marked with the yellow pilgrim's shell on a blue background, lead from all over Europe to the destination in north-west Spain.
The Way of St James access route from Merzig to Perl-Borg is part of this Europe-wide network. The route is also signposted with the pilgrim's shell, as an official access route with a blue shell on a yellow background. The route runs partly along existing premium hiking trails and is therefore of a high quality. Numerous churches and chapels along the way invite you to take a spiritual break, from St Peter's at the starting point in Merzig to St James' Chapel in Kesslingen. There are also many places to stop for a bite to eat in Merzig, Mettlach or Orscholz. And if the route is too long for you in one stretch, you can also spend the night en route.
