Baroque garden in Nell Park
Just as a baroque castle cannot be imagined without a garden, the baroque garden of Perl cannot be imagined without the Nell Palace, built in 1733, the Quirinius Chapel and the parish church of Perl.
Beschreibung
The builder of the two-storey building with a high mansard roof, the merchant Johann Marx, had received the property in fief from the Trier Cathedral Chapter at the beginning of the 18th century. Around 100 years later, the banker Georg Friedrich Job von Nell had married Anna Maria Emilia Marx and the park was laid out in the Baroque style of the time.
The landlord once led guests into the garden from above. No wonder, as the gently sloping terrain offers the most magnificent view of the garden jewel and the impressive palace overlooking the Moselle valley. Although the Nell'sche Park has changed its face and use several times, it was decided to recreate the baroque character of the past in the small park as part of the “Gardens without borders” project.
Accordingly, four plant rooms were created on 2,900 m², strictly delimited by main and side paths, with the seasonal play of colors of its hedge and flower ornaments.
High walls to the right and left, the visual axis to the parish church of St. Gervasius and St. Protasius and the Quirinius Chapel from 1712, give the park the necessary “patina of age”. The plant rooms are grouped around the circular core of the park, a fountain.
To plant the beds, the gardeners conjure up a veritable spring and summer flower theater around the noisily bubbling fountain. Robust wooden benches, the hedge border and the baroque symmetry of the grounds invite you to relax and take a deep breath.
