Odilia Chapel in the Lücknerwald
It is a place full of tranquillity and idyll, a place of contemplation. A few steps into the forest and visitors imagine themselves in another world: the busy country road between Nunkirchen and Oppen, just a few hundred metres away, fades into a distant memory. The noise of the vehicles' engines fades away and is more reminiscent of the sound of the sea. Instead, pure nature: birds chirping, lush greenery all around. The water ripples soothingly from the spring below the little chapel before feeding the stream further downstream. Legend has it that it has healing powers, especially to restore sight to the blind - which is why people from all over the neighbourhood have long made pilgrimages here to wash their eyes. The fact that the chapel, built in 1861 and surrounded by many legends, survived the devastating hurricane Wiebke almost unscathed 30 years ago, even though half the surrounding forest lay flat, has further cemented the mystical status of this place. But even for those who don't believe in miracles, it is simply a beautiful place to relax.
