St Mark's Chapel Wehingen
St. Markus Kapelle Wehingen,
Kapellenstraße, 66693 Mettlach
St Mark's Chapel in Wehingen has stood on the foundations of an old chapel since 1773. The centrepiece is the baroque altar in the interior.
St Mark's Chapel was built in 1773 on the foundations of a previous chapel mentioned in 1729, which was described as ruinous during a visitation in 1772. The simple quarry stone building with a ridge turret and a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus above the entrance is a central landmark in the village. Inside there is a baroque altar from 1707, the origin of which is unclear, as well as several statues of saints and a Stations of the Cross from 1922. A historic bell was brought back after the First World War, but was replaced by a new bell from the Mabilon foundry in 1953. Since 2007, an old carrying cross above the exit has served as a reminder of the earlier supplication processions.
