Tumulus Perl-Nennig
Mysterious burial mound
Is the tumulus very close to the Roman Villa Nennig the burial monument of the former owner of the villa?
At the southern entrance to Nennig, near the entrance to Tettingen-Butzdorf coming from the main road, is the most important burial mound in the Trier region. A monument worth seeing, which is the subject of speculation as to whether it is the burial monument of the former owner of the Nennig villa. The tumulus, called "Mahlknopf" in High German and "Mohknapp" in Moselle-Franconian dialect, extends over a diameter of 44.5 metres. The brick base, which was uncovered during an excavation in the 1970s, is still accessible to visitors at one point.
Roman burial mound or Frankish bishop's tomb?
People are still puzzling over who is really buried under the large mound near Nennig. Is it a Roman villa owner or is it Bishop Walo, who lost his life at the Viking Battle of Remich?
The burial mound was clearly used in Roman times. It is modelled on the tomb of Emperor Augustus in Rome. The representative tumulus, if it belongs to the Roman Villa Nennig, emphasises the wealth and prominent social position of the former owner of the villa. The function of this villa complex for the neighbouring settlements cannot yet be conclusively determined. Archaeological excavations carried out several times in the mid-19th century are said to have unearthed a glass urn and a sword. More recent excavations in the 1990s yielded no illuminating finds.
