Stage 1 Perl - Mettlach-Dreisbach 44km
The stage starts in the border triangle in Perl on the Moselle, the only wine-growing community in Saarland. From there, the route leads directly via the winegrowing village of Sehndorf up into the vineyards. Here you have an impressive view of the Moselle valley. The route continues towards Borg, to the Roman Villa Borg. The associated tavern with its Roman ambience spoils its guests with a variety of Roman and regional delicacies prepared according to traditional recipes using ingredients from the villa's own gardens. The route continues across the Franco-German border and the "Stones on the Border" sculpture symposium. Here, 34 sculptures line up to the left and right of the border. From Gaulandschaft, the route now heads downhill to Merzig on the Saar. The apple town has a long history of "Viezkultur" (Viez = apple wine) and invites you to make a stopover in its old town centre. The last section of the stage leads along the Saar to the Saarland's landmark. The stage ends in the middle of the "Saarschleife" at the Saarschleifenlodge in Dreisbach.
2nd stage Mettlach-Dreisbach - Saarburg 24.5km
The destination of stage 2 is currently the wine village of Ockfen. Saarburg is located 4 kilometres before the current destination and is well worth seeing with its castle ruins, winding alleyways and half-timbered houses, a bell foundry and a 20-metre-high waterfall. From Dreisbach, the journey continues through the Saar loop to the ceramic community of Mettlach. The route continues along the Saar via Saarhölzbach to Serrig. From here, the tour is accompanied by vineyards on steep slopes. The wineries along the Saar in Serrig invite you to taste the wines and linger a while. The stage finish, the monastery mill, is located in the wine village of Ockfen.
Stage 3Saarburg - Perl 36 km
The last stage leads from the Saar valley back into the Moselle valley. After leaving Saarburg, the tour leads directly into the Leukbach Valley of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Surrounded by forests and meadows, you pass the village of Trassem and continue along the Leuk to Kollesleuken. After a slightly longer but not very steep ascent, you reach the village of Faha, back in the Saarland.
From here, we recommend a detour via Weiten to the Cloef in Orscholz (19 kilometres there and back). The Cloef offers a sensational view of the Saar Loop. The nearby Cloef Atrium with its Regiothek is a showcase for the culinary and substantial treasures of our region. The Regiothek's range includes over 50 wines, sparkling wines and crémants as well as fine brandies, Viez and local specialities from around 35 winegrowers from Germany, France and Luxembourg.
From Faha, the route descends into the Moselle valley, passing the Saarland Distillery Museum in Tettingen-Butzdorf. Heading downhill, you reach the Roman mosaic in Nennig. It is considered to be the largest and best-preserved Roman mosaic north of the Alps and is one of the most outstanding monuments in Saarland. From Nennig, you cycle along the Moselle with a view of the Luxembourg vineyards back to the starting point of the pleasure tour in Perl.
