The tourist information centre is located at the Cloef Atrium, where the tour starts. A few minutes later, the view from the Cloef viewpoint over the Saar Loop. The Saar Loop has been a "National Geotope" since 2006.
At the top of the mountain spur surrounded by the Saar, you can recognise the partially restored ruins of Montclair Castle on the opposite side. The castle, which was first mentioned in a document in 1168 and is the subject of many legends and stories, was one of the most imposing castle complexes in Germany and was considered impregnable.
The further down the Steinbachtal nature reserve you go, the wetter and darker the narrow valley becomes. Many rocks and the deadwood are covered in thick mosses. Where the sun's rays shine through, various lichens grow on the rock faces. It is breathtakingly quiet in this valley. The path leads directly to the banks of the Saar via a number of steps and wooden footbridges.
From the banks of the Saar, you have to climb 200 metres in altitude. The ascent up the steep slope requires surefootedness and a good level of fitness on a narrow path.
The trail has been awarded 96 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.

The Cloef Trail starts at the Cloef Atrium, a conference centre with catering facilities, which also houses the tourist information office, and leads from the car park through a sparse forest towards the Cloef viewpoint. Shortly before reaching the steep edge, we keep to the right, cross a small valley and hike into the Steinbach Valley, a protected nature reserve. Before the descent becomes steeper, we reach a vantage point with a beautiful view of the Saar valley. We cross the narrow Kerbtal valley several times on a footbridge before reaching the road along the banks of the Saar. The path now turns left and follows the banks of the Saar to below the Cloef viewpoint. The most strenuous part of the tour awaits hikers here. The path climbs in serpentines up the steep slope to the Cloef viewpoint, constantly offering new views of the Saar Loop along the way. Once at the top, the familiar postcard motif of the Saar loop and the magnificent Umlaufberg, on which the spire of the Montclair castle ruins can be seen, awaits us. From the Cloef vantage point, the trail follows the first section of the Saar-Hunsrück Climb to the right for a short distance before turning left again at the Weselbach valley towards the Cloef Atrium. This is the starting point of the tour.
