Historic Old Town Merzig
Merzig‘s Historic Old Town or „Altstadt“ is home to numerous buildings of historic importance.
Beschreibung
Sixteen Villeroy & Boch terracottas, originally commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria for his Herrenchiemsee Palace, are accommodated in the foyer of Merzig‘s „Stadthaus“, which was built by baroque master builder and architect, Christian Kretschmar, and today serves as the Town Hall. Further evidence of Kretschmar’s architecture is found in the nearby baroque „Staad-Marxsche-Bürgerhaus“, the building in which the Tourist Information „resides“ today. Nor should we overlook the Seffersbach Bridge in the Trierer Straße, the last preserved Moeller-system tension bridge in Saarland. This was the first ever model to use a composite structure of concrete and iron. It was restored to its original condition when the bridge was renovated in 2004.
