A total of around 17,000 bunker systems were built in the West Wall, of which 32 were B-works. The B-Werk Besseringen is the only one that still retains its original structure with all the weapon domes.
The bunker complex was built between the beginning of 1938 and December 1939.
There were command rooms, weapons ranges, ammunition room, a central machine room, the kitchen, the medical room, the laundry room, a toilet room as well as ready and rest rooms on two floors. The well chamber and the collecting pits for cooling water and wastewater are even deeper. The building comprises a total of 44 rooms.
The B-Werk Besseringen is a museum in the district town of Merzig and is a listed building.
In close cooperation with the Saarland State Monuments Office, the two focal points “Memorial against War and Violence” and “West Wall and Bunker Museum” are presented in the complex.
The bunker complex was uncovered in 1997 by the Merzig Reservist Association and looked after until 2002. Since then, the Association for Local History Merzig e.V. has been responsible for the care.
