Merzig owes its name "City of Wolves" to an unusual man - the animal and behavioral researcher Werner Freund. He lived with the wild animals for more than 30 years as a "wolf among wolves" in a way that is unique in the world.
Beschreibung
He shared their everyday life and raised each of the wolves with his own hands. This is how he gained the trust of the various packs. As is usual with dogs, the animal has not adapted to the behavior of its master. It was Werner Freund who analyzed and understood the social structures within the packs over years of field studies. With the support of the city of Merzig and the “Merziger Wolfsgehege e.V.” support group, he expanded the park to a size of 8 hectares. After almost 20 years at Werner Freund's side, Tatjana Schneider is continuing his life's work in his spirit.
Around 20 animals live in spacious outdoor enclosures in the Wolfspark-Werner-Freund: European gray wolves, white arctic wolves, Canadian timber wolves and Mongolian wolves.
The Wolfspark-Werner-Freund is open all year round - including public holidays - from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be walked through free of charge. The premium hiking trail “Wolfsweg” leads to the signposted outdoor enclosures with their three meter high protective fences.
Lectures: Free lecture every 1st Sunday of the month, 4 p.m. (white wolf enclosure); Individual and group tours (chargeable) by appointment.
