Wegbeschreibung
From the main gate of the reconstructed Roman villa, the Villa Borg Trail leads directly into the Meeswald forest. Pure trail running pleasure awaits us for 5 kilometres. Seemingly endless paths make our trail runners' hearts beat faster. Trail fans will find many more great sections to the right and left of our tour. If you feel like it, simply turn off and follow the trails.
Along the way, we also come across a number of scenic and cultural points of interest. Right at the start, we pass a beautiful forest biotope with a great, natural setting. A few trail kilometres later, we come to the so-called Hunnenschanze, also known locally as Sieder, on the outskirts of Borg. Here, large stepping stones lead us over the accumulation of water in the ditches.
"Hunnenschanze" is a popular name for prehistoric and early historical fortifications, mostly ramparts or refuge castles. However, the term is not a reference to the Huns. Instead, archaeologists date its origins to the Latène period, several hundred years before the Hun invasions of Central Europe. In Borg, there are preserved remains of a rampart and ditch of an earthwork castle consisting of double ramparts with a ditch in between.
After the Hun hillfort and its mounds and ditches, which are very interesting for trail runners, we follow the Villa-Borg Trail back towards the Roman villa. The last section of the trail takes us along the former Roman road between Metz and Trier, one of the most important trade routes of the time. Today, this connection can no longer even be guessed at. Only old maps still provide information about the former route. Incidentally, numerous buildings of the Roman Villa Borg are located underground in this area. This is the former economic area, while the manorial area has been largely reconstructed.
