Roman Villa Borg Archaeological Park
Up for the ”Roman way of life“?
The Roman Villa Borg in the Moselle municipality of Perl is one of the world's outstanding cultural sights. It is the only completely reconstructed manor house of an ancient villa complex; even in Italy, the heartland of the Roman Empire, there is nothing comparable. With its gatehouse, museum-like manor house, Roman baths, latrine, Roman kitchen, craftsmen's huts and Roman gardens, Villa Borg is the ideal setting for experiencing everyday life in Rome. And at the end, an original Roman dish such as the spicy Lucanian sausages awaits you in the tavern.
Beschreibung
Villa Borg is not far from the German-Luxembourg border and an impressive reminder of how the privileged lived 2000 years ago.
Spa in the ancient world
Apart from the stately home housing an archeological museum and a gatehouse the Roman „villa rustica“ complex also includes a fully functioning Roman bath. The bath has been rebuilt in its original way and gives an indication of how important the bathing culture was in the Roman Empire.
Dine like the Romans
Don’t miss visiting the in-house tavern where Roman dishes and special drinks are being served and prepared according to original recipes of the gourmet Marcus Gavius Apicius. Most of the herbs used are home-grown in the herb garden. Altogether, the estate features six gardens designed according to historical models. Visitors can take delight in the patio garden, herb garden, the “rose room“ as well as the fruit, vegetables and flower gardens.
Event suggestion: Roman days
Every year during the first weekend in August, Roman legionnaires, traders and craftsmen put up their camp on the estate of the Villa Borg and present the ancient way of life. There will even be some spectacular gladiator fights to be witnessed. Don’t miss it!
Not far from the German-Luxembourg border, the reconstructed Roman villa complex impressively demonstrates how privileged people lived 2,000 years ago.
Our 360° panoramic view shows an all-round view of Villa Borg and gives you your first impressions of ancient life!
How can you imagine life on a Roman estate in ancient times in detail? The reconstructed Roman villa complex in Perl-Borg gives an idea of how privileged people lived at that time. Visitors go on a journey through time to the world of the Romans in the tourist highlight of the tri-border region and in the scientific research excavation.
The open-air museum is home to an archaeological museum, a functioning ancient villa bath, harmonious gardens, stylish meeting rooms, an inviting gatehouse and, last but not least, a Roman tavern. The fully functional Roman kitchen completes the domain of the “villa rustica”.
The spacious mansion houses an archaeological museum with many original finds and replicas.
The focus of the museum is on Roman finds, but pieces from pre-Roman times are also shown. The museum mainly presents originals. Some unique pieces are particularly impressive, including a bell cup from the Copper Age as well as an equestrian plaque and gold jewelry from the Roman period. Reconstructed furniture and furnishings form the thematic context, convey a homely impression and reflect the ancient feeling of space. The architecture department is outstanding, in which the exhibits demonstrate the reconstruction of the villa based on original archaeological finds.
The courtyard area with commercial buildings and the noble villa bathroom bear witness to the splendor of antiquity. If you want to experience ancient wellness, you can rent the functional, faithfully recreated bath with a group and bathe like the Romans.
The archaeological excavations on an area of 7.5 hectares continue continuously.
The scent of roses, herbs and flowers in the gardens and the sight of the boxwood-lined courtyard with the water basin suggest the ancient splendor that conveys the lively zeitgeist of our ancestors! If the plants that had their home in the garden of the villa in Roman times could tell stories, then there would be talk of conquest and occupation, but also of peaceful coexistence, trade and prosperity.
The tavern with its Roman ambience pampers guests with a variety of Roman and regional delicacies based on traditional recipes using ingredients from the hotel's own gardens. Visitors can, for example, taste a mulsum (Roman spiced wine) or a patina (Roman dessert)!
Numerous events fill the estate with life throughout the year. Every beginning of August, legionnaires, gladiators, traders and craftsmen set up camp in the Roman Villa Borg on Roman Days.
Various thematic tours, upon prior reservation, teach groups about the different aspects of Roman rural life throughout the year.
