Beschreibung
The district town of Merzig owes one of its most beautiful landmarks and one of the most important late Renaissance buildings in Saarland to the Elector and Archbishop of Trier, Philipp Christoph von Sötern (1632-1652).
The electoral palace was built between 1647 and 1649 according to plans by the Trier court architect Matthias Staudt.
In the 18th century, master builder Christian Kretzschmar redesigned the building in the Baroque style as part of restoration work after a fire.
Inside the Merzig townhouse, a very special sight awaits visitors. Since 1998 there have been 16 terracottas here, made by Villeroy & Boch on behalf of Ludwig II, which were originally intended for the facade decoration of Herrenchiemsee Palace.
The Seffersbach Bridge, built in 1901 on Trierer Straße, is the last remaining suspension belt bridge according to the “Möller system” in Saarland. This type of construction was the first to use a composite structure made of concrete and iron. The bridge was renovated in 2004 and has since been returned to its original condition.
